AM.ICAD 2025 invites composers and sound artists to submit original music works. The concert will take place during the conference days in Coimbra. This year’s theme is “Let’s Play Together”, proposing to explore perspectives of play within sonic research.
The category is open to instrumental, electronic, live-electronic, and fixed media compositions. We especially encourage and promote works that seek to foster a dialogue across multiple disciplines such as acoustic, media art, networking, sound art and technology, or that deal with the varied perspectives of play within sonic research as a collective and social bonding for fostering creativity and expression.
Submission deadline: April 4, 2025 (AoE)

We welcome works in any style or genre, with a maximum length of 20 minutes (shorter works are also welcome). Front of house PA, microphones, stage monitoring, projector and screen will be provided as standard, but any further specific equipment requirements should be outlined in the supporting document. Where possible and within reason, we will endeavour to meet performer requirements, however, extraordinary equipment requirements will need to be discussed with the music chairs following acceptance.
We particularly encourage submissions of technical papers related to music works. Please, state if the work is related to a submission to the technical program.
Submission procedure
The submission must be anonymised and not include any identifying information. Authors must refrain from citing authors’ prior work in anything but a third person. The review will consider the combination of the written concept and requirements sheets as well as an instrumental score and/or representative media submission.
In addition, please submit a PDF supporting document for the work via the conference submission portal. This can be up to 2 pages, and should contain the following information where applicable:
- Author name(s), performer name(s) and respective contacts (only after acceptance)
- Title of the work
- Statement of the relevance of the work to the conference theme and/or topics
- Program notes
- Technical requirements (audio and visual)
- Required stage layout
- Instrumentation and number of performers
- Duration
- Instrumental scores, media content and any additional material describing the artwork (audio, video, images): Submissions should contain a link to scores (pdf, musicXML), audio, and other media files stored in Dropbox, iCloud, Soundcloud, Vimeo, or another online site. Please provide a password if the link is not public. For review purposes, media files should be limited to 2-channel audio.
You may submit multiple works for review, but only one submission per participant will be accepted to the conference. Further technical details may be provided before the submission start date. If the piece involves any live performance elements, these must be indicated in the requirement sheet. Although AM.ICAD organizers will make efforts to support the realization of pieces by providing technical and human resources, authors should make arrangements to bring performers and necessary instruments or equipment.
Paper Submission (optional)
If the topic qualifies for submission as a short of full paper, authors are encouraged to optionally submit a paper in the designated categories to ICAD (as a Full Paper or Extended Abstract) or Audio Mostly (Long or Short Paper). The written component of the submission should include a discussion of the goals and aesthetics of the work and the motivations for the design/compositional choices. A review should be made of other relevant works and how the submitted work fits into these references. A technical discussion should be provided concerning computational or display issues. User reactions, experience, and feedback should be discussed. Any other forms of representation necessary for reviewers to obtain an understanding of the logistical and contextual issues involved and an evaluation of the perceptual difficulty may be included. See Call for Papers ICAD or Call for Papers AM for more details.
Selection process
The selection process will be conducted by the Music Chairs aided by a committee of experts. The acceptance decisions will be made at their sole discretion.
Attendance
Upon notification of acceptance, authors will be requested to update the submission draft with the author and performer names. Please note that, for a selected work to be performed at the AM.ICAD 2025 concert, at least one among the composer(s) and the performer(s) indicated by the composer must register for the conference. The registered person is the only one admitted to the technical program, coffee breaks, and lunches. No concert pieces will be played in the author’s absence.
